    Greywater = all household wastewater EXCEPT toilet water (blackwater) and kitchen sink water (which has food grease and pathogens).

    • Light greywater: Shower, bath, handwashing — lowest pathogen load, safest to reuse
    • Dark greywater: Laundry, kitchen sink, dishwasher — higher load, needs more care
    • Never include: Toilet water, bidet water, water with fecal matter

    A typical household produces 200-400 litres of greywater per day. For an off-grid property on tank water, reusing just the shower and laundry water can cut your fresh water consumption by 30-50%.

    System Types: Simple to Complex

    1. Laundry-to-Landscape (Simplest)

    A hose from your washing machine outlet directly to a garden bed. No pump needed — gravity fed. Requires a diverter valve so you can switch back to sewer/tank when needed.

    2. Branched Drain System (Mid-Range)

    Multiple fixtures drain to a central diverter valve via PVC pipe. Distributes water to multiple garden zones via gravity-fed branching. Requires excavation and PVC plumbing.

    3. Fully Plumbed with Surge Tank (Most Complex)

    Greywater collects in a small surge tank, then is pumped to garden drip lines. Allows irrigation scheduling and filtration. Highest cost but most flexible.

    Step-by-Step Installation

    Goal: Install a laundry-to-landscape system correctly in an afternoon.

    For laundry-to-landscape (the most common off-grid setup):

    1. Find your washing machine drain hose — it's the corrugated plastic hose at the back. You can use a diverter fitting that splits the flow between the original drain and your greywater line.
    2. Install a 3-way diverter valve — mount it at an accessible height. One position = drain to sewer/septic, other = greywater to garden. Mark both clearly.
    3. Run pipe to garden — use 35mm or 50mm PVC. Keep it as straight as possible. Support with stakes every 1-2m. The pipe should slope at least 1:100 (1cm per metre) downhill.
    4. End at a mulch basin — don't run greywater to the surface of soil. Dig a basin 30-40cm deep, fill with woodchip mulch. The mulch filters the water and feeds soil microbes. Plant fruit trees or heavy feeders above it.
    5. Test with one load — before full use, test with a single laundry load. Check all joints for leaks. Make sure water flows freely and doesn't back up.

    Choosing Plants for Greywater

    Goal: Select plants that thrive on greywater and are safe to eat from (if edible).

    • Citrus trees (oranges, lemons)
    • Avocado trees
    • Native Australian trees
    • Banana palms
    • Comfrey (medicinal)
    • Zucchini, squash

    ❌ Avoid These

    • Root vegetables (carrots, potatoes)
    • Leafy greens touched by spray
    • Plants sensitive to sodium
    • Native plants intolerant of nutrients
    • Root zone irrigation — always bury drip lines under mulch so water goes directly to root zone, not onto leaves or edible surfaces.
    • No fixed irrigation during rain — greywater should not run off. If soil is already wet, divert back to sewer.
    • Switch to greywater-safe detergent — this is non-negotiable. Sodium laurel sulfate, chlorine bleach, and borax are harmful to soil microbes and plants. Look for plant-based, low-sodium, phosphate-free formulas.
