Sodium-ion home batteries
Table salt chemistry is now a 48V rack battery you can order online.
Sodium-ion cells swapped lithium for sodium and hit the market quietly. 51.2V 200Ah+ rack units sell direct for roughly US$1,500–1,700 — competitive with LiFePO4, with zero thermal-runaway risk and happy charging below freezing (LiFePO4 can't charge under 0°C without heaters).
The catch: The vendor ecosystem is young — fewer brands, thinner documentation, and resale value is untested. Buy from vendors with real datasheets and cycle-test reports.
Use it today: If you need a battery bank in a cold climate, sodium-ion is a genuine option now. Size it like LiFePO4 — our battery calculator handles it.
A used Nissan Leaf is the cheapest 40 kWh of storage in the country — it just happens to have wheels.
Vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapters and bidirectional inverters let an EV power tools, fridges, or critical home circuits. Several 2024–2026 EVs ship with V2L built in, and CHAdeMO bidirectional units do full vehicle-to-home.
The catch: Not every EV supports it, warranties vary, and sustained high draw needs proper gear — not a $40 eBay inverter.
Use it today: Our system calculator already models EV-as-battery (V2H) when you size your bank.
Finland stores its solar power in a big pile of sand. Yes, really.
Polar Night Energy's commercial sand batteries charge with surplus solar/wind and hold heat at 500–600°C for weeks, feeding district heating. The Pornainen plant cut the town's heating emissions by 70%. The home-scale version has existed for decades: rocket mass heaters and water thermal stores are sand-battery logic at homestead size.
The catch: Grid-scale sand batteries are district infrastructure, not something you bolt to a shed. Heat-to-electricity (sand-to-power) is still a pilot.
Use it today: For a home, thermal mass is the practical move: a rocket mass heater stores a fire's heat for 12–24 hours in cob and brick.
Home biodigesters (e.g. HomeBiogas) turn scraps and garden waste into methane for cooking plus liquid fertiliser — a real product with years of field use, about 2 kWh-equivalent of cooking gas per day for a household unit.
The catch: They need warmth (digesters sulk below ~15°C) and daily feeding. This is a pet, not an appliance.
Use it today: It's in our shop's waste section with sizing notes.
Broadband from space now fits in a daypack and sips less power than your laptop.
Starlink Mini draws 25–40W and delivers broadband anywhere with sky view. For off-grid power budgets that's a rounding error — but it must be in your load calculation, because it runs all day.
The catch: Monthly cost, and it needs clear sky. Trees are the enemy.
Use it today: Add it as a load in the master calculator — 0.6–1.5 kWh/day depending on hours on.
Commercial this year — real, but rolling out region by region.
Amazon Kuiper
Starlink finally has competition — from the shopping website.
Amazon's Kuiper constellation begins commercial service from mid-2026, including an NBN Co alliance for remote Australia. Expect 100–400 Mbps class service with hardware priced to fight Starlink.
The catch: Coverage rolls out region by region; check availability before planning around it.
Use it today: If you're on Sky Muster, Kuiper's NBN partnership is the upgrade path to watch.
Panels that beat the silicon efficiency ceiling are shipping — to solar farms, not to you. Yet.
Oxford PV delivered the first commercial tandem modules (24.5% efficient) in 2024, and multiple 1 GW-class production lines are now running. Lab tandems exceed 34%.
The catch: Residential stock with 25-year warranties is realistically 2028–2030. Utility buyers get it first.
Use it today: Buy proven silicon now; treat tandem as your replacement-cycle upgrade.
