“After losing my first thirty rabbits to wet rot in that damp Tasmanian winter, I learned that dry burrows are non-negotiable for off-grid meat.”

Best Breeds for Meat (Forget Fancy Ones)

Cages: Build 'Em, Don't Buy 'Em

Don't waste cash on $200+ commercial cages. Build your own. It's dirt cheap and you control the design.

What you need:

Real talk: Build pens 1m x 0.5m. Stack them vertically to save space. One male + one female per pen. No mixing. You'll regret it.

Breeding Cycles: How to Get Meat, Fast

Does (females) come into season every 14-21 days. Gestation is 30 days. Wean kits at 4 weeks. Get them breeding again at 6 weeks. You're looking at a new litter every 6 weeks.

Do this:

Australian Suppliers (2023 Prices):
Bunnies Australia (bunniesaustralia.com.au): Breeding pairs from $45. Wire mesh from $18.
Bunnings: Wire mesh ($18), nipple drinkers ($6.50), hay ($12 for 10kg bag).
Facebook Groups: "Rabbit Farming Australia" - find cheap pairs from local breeders ($30-$50).

Practical Tips (No Bullshit)

The Bottom Line

Start with one breeding pair. Build two pens. In 6 weeks, you've got a litter. In 12 weeks, you've got meat. Cost to get started: $100-$150. Cost per meal: $1.50-$2.50. No other off-grid protein is this cheap or fast.

Stop overcomplicating it. Get the NZ White or Californian. Build the pens. Wean the kits. Eat. That's it.

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
