“After losing twelve chicks to a fox despite our electric fence, I learned that on our off-grid Tasmanian acreage, predator proofing is non-negotiable.”

Best Breeds: No Bullshit Options

Don't waste time on heritage breeds. They're slow, expensive, and need special care. Stick to these:

Price: 50 chicks from Chookers Australia = $50-$60. That's $1 per chick. Don't pay $3 for "premium" breeds.

Feeding: How to Feed Them for $0.50/Chicken

Stop buying commercial feed. It's a rip-off. Do this:

Real Talk: If you're not growing your own grain (wheat, oats), don't bother with "organic" feed. It's $3/kg. You're better off buying a $20 bag of oats from Woolworths and grinding it yourself.

Processing: Slaughter Without a Butcher

Do it yourself. It's not hard. But do it right or you'll get sick.

Processing: Slaughter Without a Butcher — Chicken Meat: Off-Grid Aussie Reality Check
Hands processing a chicken without a butcher
  1. Stun first: Hit the back of the head with a hammer (not the neck). No more than 3 seconds. If they're still moving, you're not doing it right.
  2. Slash the throat: Use a sharp knife. Cut through the windpipe and arteries. Let them bleed out completely. 5-10 minutes.
  3. Pluck: Dip in hot water (60°C) for 30 seconds. Then pluck. Use a plucker or do it by hand. It's messy but quick.
  4. Chill: Hang in a cool, shaded spot for 2 hours. Then cut into portions. Freeze in vacuum bags.

Cost: $0. You don't need a $500 plucker. A $10 knife and a bucket of hot water is all you need.

Final Reality Check

50 Red Rangers at 5 weeks = 50kg of meat. Cost: $60 (chicks) + $10 (feed) = $70 total. That's $1.40/kg. Cheaper than the supermarket ($12/kg for chicken breast).

Don't overcomplicate it. Get the chicks, let them eat your garden, kill them when they're big enough, and eat. That's off-grid chicken meat.

Stop buying "premium" breeds. Stop paying $3/kg for feed. Stop wasting time. Get chickens. Now.

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Working with electrical systems, structural modifications, or gas installations carries inherent risks. If you are not confident in your abilities, always engage a licensed professional.
