“After losing my first three sows to heat stress in that 40-degree Tassie summer, I learned that shade isn't a luxury, it's survival.”

Pig Farming Off-Grid: The Aussie No-BS Guide

Forget fancy commercial breeds. You need pigs that eat weeds, don't whine in the rain, and don't cost a fortune. Here's what works:

Breeds That Actually Work

Forget fancy commercial breeds. You need pigs that eat weeds, don't whine in the rain, and don't cost a fortune. Here's what works:

Don't waste money on Yorkshire or Landrace. They'll die in a drought and cost you more to feed.

Rooting: Stop Them Eating Your Garden

Pigs root like they're paid by the hour. If you don't manage it, they'll dig up your veggie patch in 20 minutes.

Do this: Build a small, fenced-off "rooting zone" (3m x 3m) with deep soil. Fill it with old pumpkins, potatoes, and weeds. Rotate pigs every 2 weeks. No more garden destruction.

Electric fencing is your friend. $50-$100 for a basic 100m roll from Bunnings. Don't use chicken wire – pigs will rip it like tissue paper.

Slaughter: When, How, and Don't Freak Out

Don't wait until they're 200kg. They cost more to feed and the meat's tough. Target 100-120kg (6-8 months old).

Legally, you can slaughter at home in Australia if you're not selling meat. But check your state rules (NSW: dip.nsw.gov.au). Don't risk a fine.

How to do it:

Pro tip: Slaughter in winter. The meat won't spoil as fast in cool weather.

Practical Aussie Tips

Feed them cheap: Pigs eat kitchen scraps, garden waste, and foraged weeds. Add 1kg of oats or barley per day ($0.50/kg from local co-ops). No need for expensive pellets.

Shelter is simple: A shed with a roof and dry dirt floor. $200-$400 for a basic setup. No need for fancy bedding.

Water: A 50L trough. Refill daily. Pigs drink 10L per day. Don't waste money on fancy systems.

Cost breakdown (per pig):

That's $1.50-$2.00 per kg of meat. Cheaper than the supermarket.

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Working with electrical systems, structural modifications, or gas installations carries inherent risks. If you are not confident in your abilities, always engage a licensed professional.

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
