“After dosing my nephew too aggressively with a homemade cough syrup, I learned that a teaspoon of honey is not a reliable substitute for precise millilitre measurements.”

Medicinal Syrups for Off-Grid Aussies: Honey, Glycerin & Dosing

No pharmacy runs. No panic. Just straight-up syrup making. Done.

Raw Honey Syrup for the 3am Cough That Hits When the Fire's Low

Best for coughs, sore throats. Grab local honey – Manuka is overpriced and scarce here. I mix 1 part honey with 1 part herb tea, steeping dried herbs in hot water for 10 mins, then strain. Cool before adding honey. If a cough lasts longer than a week, produces blood, brings on a fever above 39 °C, causes shortness of breath or sharp chest pain, head to a clinic – even off‑grid you need professional care.

Pros: Natural, tastes decent, works fast. Cons: Never for babies under 1 (botulism risk). Sticky. Not for diabetics.

Australian supplier: Local beekeepers at farmers markets (e.g., Sydney's Paddington Markets). $15-$25 for 500g. Avoid supermarket honey - it's mostly sugar.

Tip: Use eucalyptus or lemon myrtle honey. Native herbs = better for Aussie bodies.

Glycerin Syrups: Mixing, Storing and Dosing Off the Grid

For bubs under twelve months, this mix keeps indefinitely. I use one part vegetable glycerin—never honey, given the botulism risk—blended through one part strong brewed herb tea. Stir it well. Glycerin costs next to nothing and there's no alcohol in it, which is why I'm comfortable with it.

Pros: Safe for babies, doesn't spoil, no stick. Cons: Tastes bitter (mask with lemon or mint). Needs glycerin.

Australian supplier: Chemist Warehouse (500ml bottle). $10-$12. Or online at Health Direct (same price). Don't buy cheap glycerin - it's toxic.

Tip: Use marshmallow root or slippery elm. They're cheap and work for coughs.

The Millilitres per Dose and Hours Between Doses

Adults: 1-2 tsp (5-10ml) every 4-6 hours. Max 4x/day.

Kids 1-12: 1/2-1 tsp (2.5-5ml) every 4-6 hours. Max 4x/day.

WARNING: Never give honey to babies under 1. Ever. Glycerin is safe for them.

Tip: Use a medicine syringe (available at Chemist Warehouse for $3). Not a spoon. Dosing wrong = wasted time.

When Your Cough Stops Answering to the Spoon

Storage: Keep in dark glass jars in the fridge. Honey syrup lasts 2 weeks. Glycerin syrup lasts 1 month. Throw out if cloudy or smelly.

Herbs: Buy dried herbs (not fresh) from local suppliers. Herbology Australia (online) sells 100g of thyme or licorice root for $8-$12. No need for fancy stuff - eucalyptus leaves from your yard work fine.

Never use sugar. It's just sugar. Honey or glycerin only. And stop if no improvement in 24 hours. See a doctor, not a YouTube video.

Warning: If you're allergic to bees, skip honey. Glycerin is your backup. No excuses.

Cough Red Flags: When to Ring the Clinic

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
