Look, if you're off-grid, you don't have time for fancy pharmacy runs. Grow your own medicine. Simple. Effective. No bullshit.

Best Herbs for Aussie Conditions

Forget fancy stuff. These grow like weeds in Australia and actually work:

• Peppermint (Mentha piperita) - Digs the heat. Makes tea for stomach cramps. Plant it in a pot (spreads like a bastard).
• Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) - Drought-proof. Tea for sleep or upset tummy. Sow seeds direct in spring.
• Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) - Tough as old boots. Calms nerves. Grows in shade or sun.
• Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) - Aussie native? Close enough. Drought-tolerant. Use for circulation or wound wash.
• Ginger (Zingiber officinale) - Needs a bit of shade. Great for colds. Buy rhizomes from the supermarket (not seed).

Harvesting: When & How

Harvest wrong and you've wasted the whole season. Do it right:

• Best time: Morning, after dew dries. Never harvest wet.
• Peppermint/Chamomile: Pick leaves before flowering. Snip stems, don't pull roots.
• Rosemary: Cut 10cm sprigs. Never take more than 1/3 of the plant.
• Ginger: Dig rhizomes after 8-10 months. Cut off pieces with a bud, leave the rest.
• Never harvest: During rain, or when plants are stressed (drought/heatwave).

Preparation: Dry, Store, Use

Wet herbs = mould. Do this right:

• Dry: Bundle small stems, hang upside down in a dark, dry, airy spot (not direct sun). Takes 1-2 weeks.
• Store: Crush dried herbs into jars. Keep in airtight containers away from light. Label with date.
• Tea: 1 tsp dried herb per cup. Boil water, pour over herb, steep 5-10 mins.
• Tincture (for strong stuff): Fill jar 1/2 with dried herb, cover with 40% alcohol (vodka works). Shake daily for 4 weeks. Strain. Use 1-2ml per dose.

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

• Electrical work beyond basic 12V DC additions — requires a licensed electrician
• Structural modifications to buildings or load-bearing elements
• Gas line installation or modification
• Solar array installations above safe voltage thresholds
• Any work that affects the structural integrity of your property
