“After my 120Ah lithium bank drained in three days during a Tasmanian winter, I learned that LED watts mean nothing without realistic amp-hour calculations.”

Stop wasting your precious off-grid power on old-school bulbs. LEDs are non-negotiable for off-grid living in Australia. Here's why, and how to do it right.
Incandescents suck power. A 60W bulb? That's 60 watts draining your battery every hour. LEDs use 80% less power. A 10W LED replaces a 60W bulb. Simple math: 10W vs 60W = 5x more hours on your battery.
Not all white is equal. Avoid 6500K (daylight) – it's harsh and useless for living spaces. Stick to:
Get the wrong temp? You'll be running your lights at full blast just to feel comfortable. Waste. Not. Worth.
Non-dimmable LEDs? You're burning power 24/7. Dimmable LEDs let you run at 50% brightness for 2x the battery life. Example: A 10W dimmable bulb at 50% = 5W. That's 50% more hours.
Crucial: You need a trailing-edge dimmer (not the old switch type). Cheap dimmers fry LEDs. Buy a proper one.
Don't waste time on dodgy imports. These are the only ones worth your money:
Price note: These are actual prices. Bunnings' $8.95 "LED" bulbs are non-dimmable – they'll cost you more in battery drain. Don't be cheap.
LEDs aren't an "upgrade". They're the foundation of off-grid lighting. Get the right colour temp, get dimmable, buy from Australian suppliers. Skip the fluff. Save power. Sleep soundly.

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:
Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
