Electric Fences: Off-Grid Aussie Style (No Bullshit)

Look, if you're off-grid in Australia and want to keep the mobs out (or in), an electric fence isn't optional. It's basic. But do it wrong and you're wasting money and time. Here's how to do it right.

Energizers: Don't Be a Dumbass

Get the right energizer. Not the $50 "farm" one from the hardware store. That's for hobbyists. You need something that'll handle 100m+ of fence, salt air, and 40°C heat.

Practical tip: Buy a T-Post or Rural Direct energizer. The T-Post 10J (around $350) is the bare minimum. For 200m+ or livestock, get the 15J model ($450). Cheaper = more headaches.

Grounding: Do This or Your Fence is Useless

Grounding is where 90% of people fail. You don't just stick a rod in the dirt. You need a proper ground system. Otherwise, your fence is just a fancy paperweight.

Practical tip: At Bunnings, get the 3x 1.5m copper-bonded rods ($25) and ground wire ($15). Install them before you string the fence. If you do it after, you'll be cursing for hours.

Weed Control: Stop the Fence from Being a Weed Trap

Weeds touching your fence = dead fence. Every. Single. Time. You don't have time to trim 50m of fence every week. Do it right once.

Practical tip: Rural Direct sells glyphosate concentrate ($22 for 1L). Mix it 1:10 with water in a spray bottle. Do this before you even put up the fence. If you don't, you'll be spending more on fence repairs than the fence itself.

Final Word

Electric fences aren't hard. But they're not "set and forget" either. Get the energizer right, ground properly, and kill weeds before they start. Otherwise, you're just paying for a fancy fence that doesn't work. Simple. Done.

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Working with electrical systems, structural modifications, or gas installations carries inherent risks. If you are not confident in your abilities, always engage a licensed professional.

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
