“After losing three tonnes of slip-straw to a gale on my first cabin, I learned the hard way that clay must be mixed with a handful of chicken wire, not just hope.”

Forget fancy prefab. Slip-straw-clay is the cheapest, most effective off-grid wall system you'll find. No bullshit. Just clay, straw, and sweat. Here's how it works.
Grab a bucket, mix clay (not dirt) with chopped straw. Ratio: 1 part clay to 3 parts straw. Add water until it's like wet dough. Pack it into formwork in 100mm layers. Tamp hard. Repeat until wall is built. Done. No special tools. Just a trowel and your back.
200mm minimum. Seriously. Less than that and you're asking for cold, damp, and structural failure. 250-300mm is ideal for Aussie climate. Thinner = more heat loss. Thicker = more insulation. Don't skimp. Your off-grid life depends on it.
Option 1: Raw. Leave it as is. It's ugly but works. Option 2: Lime plaster. Best option. Apply 10-15mm of lime plaster over the clay. Stops rain damage, gives a smooth finish. Option 3: Clay wash. Cheap but messy. Only use if you don't care about looks. Skip the paint. It'll peel off.
Clay: Clay & Earth Products (NSW) - $85-$110 per tonne (1 tonne covers 10m² at 250mm thickness). Earthworks Australia (QLD) - $95/tonne. Clay Direct (WA) - $105/tonne. Buy 1 tonne minimum.
Straw: StrawBale Australia (VIC) - $35 per bale (200kg). You need 1 bale per 2m² of wall. Don't buy hay. It's useless.
Lime Plaster: Earth Building Supplies (SA) - $120 per 25kg bag (covers 10m²). Clay & Earth (NSW) - $110/bag.
Pro Tip: Mix clay in a wheelbarrow, not a bucket. You'll go insane trying to mix it by hand. Get a concrete mixer or hire a local builder to do it for $50/hr. Saves your back and your sanity.
Slip-straw-clay isn't fancy. It's cheap, sustainable, and works in the Aussie heat. Build it right, and your off-grid home will last decades. Stop overcomplicating it. Get the clay, get the straw, and start building. Done.
