Off-Grid Cooking Solutions: From Solar Ovens to Induction

Cooking chews through power faster than anything else in a house. A standard electric range pulls between 3,000 and 12,000 watts—well past what most off-grid inverters can handle. I learnt this the hard way at my bush property when I tried to run a standard induction cooktop off my 3000W Victron MultiPlus inverter. The breaker tripped within minutes. The replacement fuse and damaged cooktop cost me $450.

What Powers Your Off-Grid Cooktop

Cooking is one of the biggest power draws in a home. A standard electric range can pull 3,000-12,000W, far beyond what most off‑grid inverters can handle. I once plugged a regular range into my 3kW Victron MultiPlus 3000 inverter at my place; the inverter blew, wrecking the unit and the battery bank and setting me back $2,450 in repairs and a new battery bank. That mess made it clear that off‑grid cooking only works when you match the stove to your system’s output.

Two tools earn their keep in my off‑grid kitchen: a zero‑energy solar oven and a high‑power induction cooktop. The solar oven runs on sun alone. The induction cooktop needs reliable power but heats fast.

Propane Cooking

Propane handles my high-heat cooking and never touches my electrical system. Turn the valve, strike a match, flame's there in a heartbeat—no waiting on the sun, no second-guessing the battery.

Induction Cooktops on Inverter Power

I pulled the old hotplate and put an induction unit in its place. The cooktop sends electromagnetic energy straight into the pot, so the metal heats while the glass stays cool. That design gives me 90%+ efficiency, and because there's no open flame or glowing coil, it's safer than traditional electric or gas.

When the Job Requires a Licensed Gas Fitter or Electrician

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.

Frequently asked questions

Can you run an induction cooktop off solar batteries?

I run mine off inverter power, so yes, it can absolutely be done off-grid. The key is having enough battery storage and a properly sized inverter to handle the draw. On a smaller system you'll want a second cooking method for bigger meals so you're not flattening the batteries in one go.

Do I need a licensed gas fitter to install a propane cooktop?

In Australia, any work on a fixed gas line has to be done by a licensed gas fitter — that's a legal requirement, not a suggestion. I've called it out in the article because plenty of off-gridders don't realise the rule applies to them. Portable bottle setups are a different story, but anything plumbed in needs a tradie.

Are solar ovens actually worth it for off-grid living?

Once you learn what a solar oven does well, it's one of the most useful bits of kit you can own. It's perfect for slow cooks, baking, rice, stews — anything that benefits from long, steady heat. Free to run, silent, and it doesn't touch your battery bank at all.

What's the cheapest off-grid cooking option?

A wood stove is hard to beat on running cost because the fuel's free if you've got timber on your place. The trade-off is all the chopping, splitting, drying and chimney cleaning. Most off-gridders I know pair a wood stove with a backup like induction or gas for quick meals and mornings.
