Off-grid in Australia? Your soil’s your lifeline. Green manure isn’t some fancy trend—it’s dirt cheap, no-fuss soil food. We’ll tell you exactly what to plant, when to kill it, and how to bury it. No PhD needed.

Best Crops for Aussie Conditions

Forget fancy. These work in our dry, salty, or clay soils:

• Mustard (brown or white): Crushes compaction, smother weeds. Plant in cool months. $5-$8/100g (Diggers)
• White Clover: Fixes nitrogen, feeds bees. Tolerates drought. $6-$10/100g (Farmhouse Seeds)
• Buckwheat: Fast (3 weeks), kills weeds. Summer sowing only. $4-$7/100g (Diggers)

Termination Timing: When to Kill It

Let it go to seed? You’ve just planted weeds. Kill it before it flowers:

• Mustard: 6-8 weeks after planting (before yellow flowers)
• White Clover: When 50% in bloom (8-10 weeks)
• Buckwheat: At first flowers (6-8 weeks)
• Winter Rye: Before seed heads form (8-10 weeks)
• Vetch: At peak bloom (10-12 weeks)

Mow it down with a spade or sickle. Don’t wait. If it seeds, you’re screwed.

How to Incorporate: Bury It Right

Two ways. Do it right or it’s useless:

• Surface mulch: Mow, leave on soil. Best for dry areas (saves water). Let it sit 1-2 weeks before planting.
• Dig it in: Spade it into top 10cm of soil. Do this 2 weeks before planting your next crop. No digging? Use a broadfork.

Never bury it deep. It needs to decompose fast. If it’s green and wet, it’ll rot in 2-3 weeks. If it’s dry, it’ll take months.

Off-Grid Pro Tips

Real talk for off-grid:

• Plant after your main crop harvest. No wasted space.
• Use rainwater to soak seeds if it’s dry. No pumps needed.
• Don’t mix species unless you’re lazy. One crop per patch = easier termination.
• If you’re in the dry north, stick to buckwheat and mustard. Clover dies in heat.
• Never use herbicides. You’re off-grid—this is natural.
