Best Cover Crop Mixes (Aussie-Tested)

Winter Mix (May–Sept)

Plant when soil cools (late April). Stops erosion, fixes nitrogen. Mix:

• 30% Winter Rye (hardy, chokes weeds)
• 30% Crimson Clover (fixes nitrogen, blooms for bees)
• 20% Vetch (deep roots, fixes nitrogen)
• 20% Mustard (fights soil pests)

Cost: ~$18–$25 for 1kg bag. Sow 10–15kg/ha (yes, that’s 10kg per hectare, not acre).

Summer Mix (Oct–Feb)

Plant when soil warms (Oct). Stops heat damage, boosts organic matter. Mix:

• 40% Buckwheat (grows fast, chokes weeds)
• 30% Cowpea (fixes nitrogen, drought-tolerant)
• 20% Sunn Hemp (builds soil structure)
• 10% Radish (breaks up compaction)

Seasonal Timing: Don’t Be a Dummy

Planting at the wrong time = wasted seed and money. Here’s the deal:

• Winter: Plant 4–6 weeks before first frost. Rye needs cold to germinate. If you plant in July and it’s 25°C? You’ll have a dust storm, not crops.
• Summer: Plant 2 weeks before summer rains. Buckwheat dies if it’s too dry. If you wait for rain, you’re already late.
• Always: Sow after harvest, not before. Cover crops are the cleanup crew, not the main crop.

Practical Tips (No Theory, Just Results)

These are non-negotiable:

• Don’t broadcast seed. Drill it 1–2cm deep. Surface-sown? 70% of it blows away. Waste of money.
• Chop and drop when flowering. Don’t wait for seed. You want biomass, not weeds.
