What's a Draft Dodger?

It's a rubber or brush strip glued to your door's bottom edge. Stops cold air, dust, and insects from sneaking in. Not a "gadget" – just a $15-$30 strip that works. Forget fancy gap seals. This is the real deal.

Why It Matters Off-Grid

If you're off-grid, every watt counts. Drafts suck heat out of your home like a broken fridge. In winter, a 1cm gap can waste 20% of your heating. In summer, it's the same with cooling. You're paying for air you didn't buy. Fix the door. Save cash.

Effectiveness Testing (No Bull)

Test it yourself. Hold a lit candle near the door gap. If the flame flickers, you've got a draft. Now slap on a door sweep. Repeat. If the flame stays steady? You've won. Simple. No expensive tools needed. We tested 3 types on a 1970s caravan door:

Result? Rubber sweep = winner. Costs $18 at Bunnings. Brush = $25. Aluminium = $40. Don't waste cash.

Pro Tip: Measure your door gap first. If it's over 1cm, you need a rubber sweep with a flexible edge. If it's tiny, a brush works. Don't buy the wrong one – it'll just sit there looking stupid.

Warning: Don't glue it to the floor. It'll wear out fast. Stick it to the door.

Why You're Still Losing Drafts

If you've installed a sweep and still feel the cold? It's not the sweep. It's the door itself. Check:

Fix the door first. Then add the sweep. One thing at a time.

It walks through removing the old sweep, cutting the new one to length, and securing it with screws, giving you a tight seal against drafts and pests on an off‑grid door. — Jenny Mills
