“After losing my first winter clover to frost, I learned that planting rye and hairy vetch together is the only way to guarantee ground cover on our Tasmanian slopes.”
Twelve acres of sandy Tassie soil taught me what cover crops actually do. They fix nitrogen, build structure, and hold the ground together through our winter rains. I've put clover, vetch and rye through their paces across four seasons. Here's what held up and what didn't.
| Crop | Nitrogen Fixation | Biomass Yield (AU) | Termination Method | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clover (White) | High (15-25kg N/ha) | High (5-8t/ha) | Roller-crimper or mow + mulch | Summer fallow, low-rainfall zones |
| Vetch (Hairy) | Very High (20-30kg N/ha) | Medium-High (4-6t/ha) | Roller-crimper or mow before flowering | Winter crops, heavy soils |
| Rye (Cereal) | None (but suppresses weeds) | Very High (8-10t/ha) | Chop + drop or mow 2 weeks pre-sow | Wind erosion, quick biomass |
AS/NZS Note: All crops comply with AS/NZS 4454:2019 for soil management. Avoid vetch in high-rainfall coastal zones (risk of fungal disease).
Planting time: Clover & vetch = April-May (cool season). Rye = March-April (winter). Don't plant after heavy rain – soil compaction kills seedlings.
AU Suppliers & Pricing (2024):
Pro Tip: Buy a $45 roller-crimper from Amazon AU. Saves 2 hours/week vs mowing. Pays for itself in 3 months on a 100m² plot.
On my 12 acres in Tassie, I rely on three cover crops: clover for dry spells, vetch through winter, rye when I need things moving fast. I don't bother with the fancy seed mixes. Rotate them, keep something growing on every bed year-round, and the soil gives back: better yields, less water going in. Done.
While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:
Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
