“After losing fifteen birds to a fox that slipped under a half-metre high skirt, I now build all tractors with buried galvanised mesh extending one foot underground.”

Chicken Tractor Design for Australian Off-Grid Living

Designing a chicken tractor in Australia? You need to think about size, weight, mobility, predator protection, and where to buy. Here's the lowdown.

Blunt. Practical. No fluff.

Designing a chicken tractor in Australia? You need to think about size, weight, mobility, predator protection, and where to buy. Here's the lowdown.

Size & Weight: Don't Be a Sissy

Chicken tractors need to be big enough to house your flock but light enough to move. Aim for 1-2m x 1-2m. Too small? Chickens will stress. Too heavy? You'll struggle moving it.

FactorRecommendation
Minimum Size1.2m x 1.2m (4ft x 4ft)
Max WeightUnder 150kg (330lbs) for mobility
Roof HeightAt least 1.5m (5ft) for ventilation

Mobile vs Fixed: Which is Better?

Mobile tractors let you rotate grazing areas, but fixed ones are cheaper. Choose based on land size and budget.

OptionProsCons
MobileRotates grazing, reduces pest damageMore expensive, harder to build
FixedCheaper, easier to maintainCan't rotate, risk of overgrazing

Predator Protection: Don't Be a Doormat

Australian predators include foxes, dogs, and birds of prey. Use AS/NZS-approved hardware and secure fencing.

Protection TypeDetails
Wire MeshUse 2.5mm galvanised wire (AS/NZS 1171)
Chicken Wire1.5mm mesh, buried 150mm deep
Roof Cover100g/m² shade cloth (Bunnings)

Practical Tips

Tip 1: Use 40mm x 40mm timber for frames. It's strong, cheap, and available at Bunnings.
Tip 2: Add a 300mm deep trench around the tractor. Foxes can't dig out of it.
Tip 3: Use Jaycar's 12V solar panel for lighting. It's reliable and low-maintenance.

Worth a watch: Off Grid Chicken Coop Tour | Chicken Compost · Simply Off Grid - Australia

The video from Simply Off Grid in Australia walks through a real off‑grid coop and shows how it links straight into chicken‑compost loops, which is the same principle I lay out in the guide for closing nutrient cycles on a small block. — Fiona Gallagher

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
