“After losing my first tomato crop to a three-day pump failure, I learned that off-grid vertical towers need at least two backup power sources, not one.”

Stacked towers grow plants in layers. No soil, just water and nutrients. Uses 90% less water than traditional gardening. Perfect for a tiny off-grid block. Solar-powered pump + LED lights = self-sufficient veg. Simple.
Bad spacing = dead plants. For leafy greens (lettuce, herbs): 10-15cm between plants. For bigger stuff (tomatoes, capsicums): 20-25cm. If you can't fit your hand between plants, you've gone too far. Crowding = mould, pests, and wasted cash. Done.
No light = no food. You need full-spectrum LEDs. For a 1.5m tower, get a 100W solar-ready LED (like GrowBox's). Runs on 12V solar, lasts 50,000 hours. Cheap lights = dead plants. Budget $200-$300. Don't skip this. It's the difference between food and compost.
NFT (nutrient film technique) is for horizontal channels. Vertical towers don't use it. If a seller says "NFT channels" for a tower, they're lying. Stick to drip systems or ebb-and-flow. They're simpler, cheaper, and work in towers. Don't waste your money on fake NFT claims.
• Heat: Shade the tower from 11am-3pm in summer. Use a cheap shade cloth from Bunnings. Too hot = wilted plants.
• Pests: Keep it clean. Remove dead leaves. Spray with neem oil (Bunnings, $15) for bugs. No chemicals.
• Water: Use rainwater. A 200L barrel is enough. Towers use so little water, you'll barely notice the pump.
• Power: Get a 200W solar panel + 12V battery. Enough to run the pump and lights for 3-5 days without sun. Don't skimp.
Don't waste cash on dodgy online towers. These are the only ones that work for Aussie off-grid:
That's it. No fluff. Get a tower, space it right, light it up, and you'll be eating fresh veg in weeks. Stop reading. Go buy one.
