“After wasting three expensive UV bulbs in one year, I learned that replacing them every eight months is the only way to keep our off-grid water safe.”

Seven-step sequence for replacing a UV steriliser bulb safely, ending with timer reset and log entry.

Timing: Don't Be a Dumb Aussie

UV bulbs don't just "die" – they slowly lose power. Don't wait for the water to taste like swamp. Replace at 9000 hours (roughly 1 year). If you're off-grid and using it daily, replace every 6 months. Seriously.

Check your unit's timer. If it's not counting hours, buy a $20 UV timer from Bunnings. Or just set a calendar reminder. No excuses.

Safety: No Bullsh*t

UV light = cancer risk. Never look at the bulb while it's on. Never touch it with bare hands – oils from skin kill it faster. Wear gloves. Use a clean cloth. If you're using a glass tube, turn off the power and drain the system first. No "I'll just peek" nonsense.

After replacement, run the system for 15 minutes with no water flowing. Check for leaks. Then test with a UV checker (see below). If it's not glowing blue, you've got a problem.

Throughput Calibration: Don't Waste Water

Your UV unit has a max flow rate. If you run water too fast, it won't sterilise. Check your manual – most off-grid units max out at 3-5L/min. If you're getting more than that, you're risking illness.

Calibrate: Run water at your usual rate. Put a bucket under the tap. Time how long it takes to fill 10L. If it's under 2 minutes (5L/min), slow it down. Use a tap with a flow restrictor. Don't waste water on bad sterilisation.

Practical Tips: Aussie-Approved

Real talk: If you're off-grid and your UV system isn't working, you're drinking raw water. Replace the bulb. Now. Don't wait for "next week". Your health isn't worth the hassle.

Done. Go fix it. Your family's health depends on it.
