When your batteries are flat (below 50% charge), the regulator dumps full solar power into them. It's like shovelling fuel into a cold engine. This stage runs until batteries hit ~80% charge. Don't expect this to last long – it's the only time you'll see your solar panels working at max capacity.
Once batteries hit ~80%, the regulator holds voltage steady (usually 14.4V for 12V systems) while reducing current. This is where the magic happens – forcing the last 20% of charge into the battery. It takes 1-3 hours. If your regulator skips this? Your batteries never get fully charged. Period.
After full charge, the regulator drops voltage to ~13.6V (12V systems) to prevent overcharging. It's like a constant trickle feed to keep batteries topped up without boiling them dry. This stage runs 24/7. If your regulator doesn't do this? You'll be replacing batteries every 2 years.
Don't buy "PWM" regulators for off-grid. They're cheaper but only do two stages (bulk and float). They'll kill your deep-cycle batteries. Stick to MPPT – it's worth the extra $200.
Size your regulator correctly. A 50A regulator for a 1kW solar array? You'll be frying it. Rule of thumb: Solar array wattage ÷ battery voltage × 1.25 = minimum regulator amps. Example: 1.2kW array / 12V = 100A. Get a 125A+ regulator.
Check the battery type. Lead-acid needs 3-stage. Lithium? Most MPPT regulators handle it automatically. But if you're using AGM/Gel, confirm the regulator supports "AGM" mode – otherwise it'll overcharge them.

Don't buy from eBay or AliExpress. You'll get a fake regulator that doesn't do absorption. It'll cost you $1,000 in battery replacements before you realise what's wrong.
3-stage charging isn't "nice to have" – it's the only way to get your batteries to last. Skip it and you're just throwing money away. A $500 regulator that does 3-stage? That's a $500 investment in your off-grid future. A $100 PWM? That's a $1,000 mistake waiting to happen.
