By Dave Miller · off-grid sparky · 22 years wiring solar, batteries and sheds in central QLD
“After blowing three inverters in central QLD, I learned a 12-volt fridge needs at least 400Ah of battery to survive a cloudy week.”

Most solar fridges suck power. Here's what actually matters:
| Model | Energy (kWh/day) | Capacity | Price (AUD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waeco CFX3 55 | 0.85 | 55L | $1,150 |
| Dometic RM65 | 0.75 | 65L | $1,395 |
| Thetford CFX3 55 | 0.92 | 55L | $1,290 |
| Esky 12V (basic) | 1.3 | 40L | $795 |
Bottom line: The Dometic RM65 uses 15% less power than the Waeco but costs $245 more. You'll need 20% more solar panels to run the Esky.
Size matters more than you think – A 55L fridge in a 4x4 is fine. But for a family off-grid, 65L is the minimum. Don't skimp.
Don't trust "solar-ready" claims – Most need a 12V battery. If your system is 24V, you'll need a converter. Adds $200+.
Location is everything – A fridge in a hot shed (35°C+) uses 30% more power. Mount it in shade. Always.
Forget overseas sites. These are the only places that ship to remote Australia without 6-week delays:
Off Grid Australia – Waeco CFX3 55: $1,195 (includes 12V wiring). Free shipping to QLD/NSW.
Solar Direct – Dometic RM65: $1,420 (with 200W solar panel bundle). Best for WA/NT.
Aussie Solar – Thetford CFX3 55: $1,240 (no free shipping, but best warranty).
Price note: If you buy from Amazon or eBay, you'll pay $300+ extra for import fees and slow shipping. Not worth it.
For most Aussies: Waeco CFX3 55 is the sweet spot. It's cheaper than Dometic, uses less power than Esky, and works with standard 12V systems. If you've got the cash, Dometic RM65 is better for bigger families. But if you're on a budget? The Esky is a joke. It'll kill your battery in summer.
Don't buy based on "solar" marketing. Buy based on kWh/day. Your battery bank will thank you.
While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:
Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
