Types: Pick the Right One or You're Stuck
There are two real options. The third is a scam.
Chain drive (most common): Works for most gates. Cheap, reliable. $400-$800. Needs a solid anchor point. If your gate's heavy or rusty, it'll struggle. Don't buy these if your gate swings like a drunk kangaroo.
Swing/slide (for heavy gates): For gates over 150kg or 3m wide. $800-$1,500. Worth it if you're serious. Don't try to force a chain drive on a 200kg steel gate. It'll die in 6 months.
Wireless "solar" units: A scam. They're just battery-powered with a tiny solar panel that can't keep up. You'll be replacing batteries every 3 months. Skip it.
Battery Backup: Non-Negotiable
Solar panels don't work at night or during a week of rain. Your gate will be dead if you skip this. No excuses.
Real talk: Get a 12V deep-cycle battery (like a golf cart battery) as backup. $150-$250. It'll keep your gate working for 7+ days without sun. Cheaper than replacing a $1,000 opener because you didn't do this.
Don't buy "solar with built-in battery" unless it's a proper deep-cycle. Most are just cheap phone batteries. They die in winter.
Solar Positioning: Get This Wrong and You're Done
Mounting the panel wrong = useless gate. Simple as that.
Angle: Face north (in Australia). Tilt it at 30-35 degrees (same as your latitude). If you face east or west, you lose 30%+ output. Don't be lazy.
Shade: No trees, no roof overhangs. Even a small shadow at noon kills efficiency. If your gate's under a tree, don't bother with solar. Get a generator backup.
Size: 100W panel minimum. 150W if you're in the south (e.g., Tasmania). 80W won't cut it. You'll be hand-cranking every time it rains.

Mounting: Bolt the panel directly to a fence post or gate frame. Don't use "solar adhesive" – it peels off in 3 months. Use stainless steel screws. Rain will kill it otherwise.
Testing: Before you commit, run it for 3 days straight in winter. If it fails, walk away. Don't trust "works in summer" claims.
Don't buy a $200 "solar" gate opener from eBay. It'll be dead in 3 months. You'll spend more fixing it than buying a proper one.
Bottom line: Proper solar gate opener = $400-$1,500. Cheap one = $200 now, $500 in repairs. Be an Aussie and do it right.
