“After losing my first batch of native herbs to 40-degree heat in a shed with no airflow, I learned that one fan isn't enough for a true solar dryer.”

Forget the $500 "premium" dryers. You don't need a shed. Here's how to make a solar dryer that actually works for herbs, on your off-grid setup.
Build it small. Seriously. A 40cm x 40cm box is enough. Big dryers = wasted space and heat loss. We're not drying wheat here – it's herbs. Stackable mesh trays (like old cake racks) fit perfectly. No fancy wood needed. Use recycled timber or even a repurposed fridge box. Cut a 10cm vent at the top and bottom. Done. Costs under $50 to build.
No fan? Your herbs get mouldy. Plain and simple. Get a 12V DC fan (50mm size). They run off your solar battery, don't drain it fast, and cost $15-$25. Don't buy those noisy 240V fans – they'll kill your off-grid vibe. Solar Direct sells a 50mm fan for $18.95 (free shipping Australia-wide). Mount it at the bottom, pointing up. Airflow is everything. If it's not moving, it's not drying.
Don't overload. Thin layers only. Basil, mint, rosemary – spread in a single layer on mesh trays. No more than 1cm thick. Position the dryer in full sun (north-facing if you're in Australia). Check every 4 hours. If it's still damp after 24 hours, you're doing it wrong. Herbs should snap when dry. If they're sticky? You've got mould. Start with 100g max. Test first.
Practical Tip: Use old baking trays with mesh. Cut them to size. No need to buy special trays. Saves $20 and space.

Not worth it. You can build a better one for $50. Unless you're lazy. Then pay the $250. But we're not lazy.
Bottom line: Compact, fan-driven, herbs dried right. No fluff. No wasted cash. Build it this week. Your mint will thank you.
