“After the 2019 bushfires, I learned that a 4-metre copper rod won't save you if the grounding rod is buried in dry sand.”

Lightning Protection: Off-Grid Survival Guide

Lightning Rods: Stop Wasting Money

Pointy metal things on your roof. Not optional. Must be copper (aluminium rusts in salt air, causes fires). Spacing: max 10m between rods. Height: 1m above roof peaks.

Don't DIY. A $500 rod system that fails means your $10k solar setup fries. Get a licensed electrician. Lightning Protection Australia (LPA) does it right. Price: $1,500-$3,500 for a standard off-grid home. Cheap alternatives? They're just fire starters.

Grounding: The Make-or-Break Part

Without good grounding, rods are useless. You need low-resistance earth. Copper rods (1.5m long, 16mm diameter) driven 3m deep. Bond all rods together. Test resistance: must be under 10 ohms. In sandy soil (common in Australia), you'll need 3+ rods.

Supplier: Bunnings (copper rods $25-$50 each). But get a pro to test it. $200-$500 for a soil test. If it's over 10 ohms? You're not safe. Fix it before the next storm.

Surge Suppressors: Save Your Electronics

Lightning doesn't have to hit your house to fry your gear. Surges travel through power lines. Must have two types:

Don't buy eBay knockoffs. They fail when you need them. Clipsal or Siemens SPDs: $150-$400 for main panel. $50-$150 for point-of-use. Install both. One is useless without the other.

Practical Tip: Run all power cables at least 2m away from grounding rods. If they're close, lightning can jump between them and fry your gear. Simple fix. Costs nothing.

• Energen: Type 1 SPDs $180-$380 (Clipsal brand)
• Jaycar: Point-of-use surge protectors $65-$120

Final Word

Lightning protection isn't optional. It's as essential as your water tank. Spend the money now. Or spend $10k replacing your solar system after a storm. No ifs, no buts. Get it right. Or get struck.

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Working with electrical systems, structural modifications, or gas installations carries inherent risks. If you are not confident in your abilities, always engage a licensed professional.

It breaks down the 30‑30 rule for timing your move to shelter and shows exactly how to position yourself in a low spot when you’re caught out, which is the kind of hands‑on detail that fits right into an off‑grid safety plan. — Jenny Mills

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
