Biogas can run generators or be upgraded to biomethane for pipeline injection. It requires a digester vessel, piping, and gas handling equipment. While powerful, biogas systems are capital-intensive and require careful feedstock management.

What Actually Works: Biofuel Feedstocks for Australian Conditions

Waste Cooking Oil (WCO): The easiest and cheapest feedstock. Collect used cooking oil from restaurants, canteens, and food processors. WCO must be filtered and water-free before use. Each litre of WCO yields approximately 0.9 litres of biodiesel. In urban-adjacent rural areas, commercial kitchens will often give away WCO or pay a small amount for collection. Setting Up the Shed

Basic Biodiesel Production Process:

  1. Collect and filter WCO: Strain through a coarse mesh to remove food particles, then pass through a fine filter or cloth. Heat gently to 50–60°C to reduce viscosity for easier filtering.
  2. Test for water: Water causes soap formation and poor yields. Heat oil to 100°C and hold for 10 minutes — any bubbling or foaming indicates water. Dry the oil thoroughly before proceeding.
  3. Mix methanol and catalyst: For a 100L batch, mix approximately 20L of methanol with 1–1.5 kg of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in a separate container until fully dissolved. The catalyst dissolves exothermically — use a heat-resistant vessel.
  4. Combine and react: Add the catalyst-methanol mixture to the heated oil in the reaction vessel. Stir continuously or use a recirculation pump. Maintain temperature at 50–55°C and react for 1–2 hours.
  5. Settle and separate: Allow the mixture to settle in a settling tank for 8–24 hours. Two layers form: biodiesel (golden, on top) and glycerin (dark, on the bottom). Drain the glycerin.
  6. Wash the biodiesel: Wash the crude biodiesel with water to remove residual catalyst, methanol, and soap. Gentle water washing in multiple small batches is effective. Dry the fuel thoroughly before use.

Safety: Methanol is highly toxic and flammable. Always wear chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated space — ideally outdoors. Keep a Class B fire extinguisher (foam or CO₂) within reach. Methanol absorption through skin is rapid; limit handling time and wash immediately if contact occurs. Never smoke near the work area.

What It Actually Costs (and What Breaks)

I bolted together a small-batch biodiesel rig from second-hand gear—50 to 100 litres per run, costing me between AUD $500 and $1,500. The setup's basic: a settling tank, reaction vessel, washing drum and a fuel filter.
